17 World-Class Agile Speakers LIVE!

Over 20 hours of live talks, networking & collaboration with THOUSANDS of agilists!

Dave Cornelius, and Richard Lawrence

Will this be your

Cannonball Run?

Times are strange for agilists.
While we used to thrive off of in-person interactions, we're now mostly cut off from direct contact with our teams.
While before we'd "walk the floor" to get a better sense of what was happening with our team and organization...
Now we struggle to connect with them via zoom.
2 years of having to "adjust", while missing some of our most basic coaching tools.
It's been frustrating.
Painful even.
But I have a question for you...

Will this be your Cannonball Run?

The Cannonball Run is an unsanctioned speed record for driving across the United States, typically accepted to run from New York City to Los Angeles, covering a distance of about 2,906 miles.
In 1915 Erwin Baker made it across the country in  271 hours and 15 minutes, averaging 50mph.
60 years later, Erwin's record looked downright boring when it was broken. The new record?
40 hours 51 minutes in 1971.
While the record was impressive, it was recently smashed.
In  2020, 3 intrepid men set the new cannonball record of 25 hours and 39 minutes.
How did they do it (and WHAT does this have to do with agility you ask)?!
When comparing 2020 to any other time in history, two things are unquestionably true:
  1. The State-Of-The-Art in both unsanctioned car racing and agile practice has never been more advanced
  2. The disruption of the pandemic gives the BRAVE a huge advantage
The record was broken, in large part, due to there being fewer drivers on the road during pandemic lockdown.
The state-of-the-art aligned with opportunity.
While I don't endorse putting people's lives at risk driving over 175 miles per hour, you can use this same opportunity to improve your agile practice.
As you've no doubt discovered over the last 2 years, there's an amazing opportunity during these trying times.
The brave agilists who take the time to hone new skills can better connect with those they work with, even if they have to do it remotely.
If you're ready to take advantage of our uncertain times, we're here to help.
We've assembled some of the most brilliant agile minds to get you tuned up for the road ahead.

Join us, and you'll:

  • Discover what's STATE-OF-THE-ART in agility, and how you can improve your craft immediately

Agile Scaling: 3 factors you need for success

Have you ever thought to yourself ...

  • How can we make Agile Scaling less of a goal itself and more of a method to get to our organizational goals?
  • We know we need to scale but where do we go from here?

If you have, come to this session to get the answers you've been searching for!

This talk will focus on three factors that emerged as common themes throughout Nicole's experience working on government Agile Scaling projects that ultimately impacted the trajectory of each agency's Scaling journey:

  • Communicate vision consistently
  • Focus on your people genuinely
  • Create your own path intentionally

Regardless of the agency acronym or the frameworks used, these concepts shaped their Scaling outcomes.

So, whether you are working in the government, commercial or the non-profit space, these concepts can help you take your organization to the peak of its Agile Scaling journey.

Agile Planning with the Product Goal

The November 2020 Scrum Guide introduced the Product Goal as a commitment made in the product backlog which serves as a target for the Scrum Team to plan against.

But... If you are used to the five-layered onion of Agile Planning, it can be hard to understand how the Product Goal fits in

How does the Product goal relate to the Product Vision? To the Product Roadmap? To Release Planning or Sprint Planning?

The addition of the Product Goal can QUICKLY make things that were once clear, murky.

In this session, Dave Prior will help create clarity around how to work with the Product Goal by drawing on the techniques and examples he has been using to help teams and students make sense of it all. He'll show you how work flows from from the Sprint Goal, through Sprint Planning, and down to Sprint tasks.

You'll leave this session with useful tools for gaining clarity on our the direction of your product, by focusing on the Product Goal.

How Healthy Conflict Goes Wrong

Do teams really need conflict? Yes, they absolutely do. Conflict is a sign that something is trying to happen. The best ideas and outcomes are from diverse experiences and contributions, thus this means conflict

Unfortunately, many people try to avoid conflict, which only leads to more conflict and drama. Now drama, that is what we should be eliminating! This session examines the differences between conflict and drama, why conflict is essential, and common reasons why conflict goes wrong by becoming drama.

The Top 5 Backlog Refinement Mistakes Almost Everyone Makes

Backlog refinement is critical for any agile team—if your backlog isn’t in good shape, everything downstream falls apart. But there’s a common set of mistakes almost everyone makes when it comes to backlog refinement, mistakes that make it overwhelming for Product Owners, frustrating for teams, and ultimately ineffective for everyone involved. In this session, we’ll look at those top 5 backlog refinement mistakes and how to fix each one.

Generative Leadership: Enabling Happy Contributing People

It is estimated that disengaged people cost organizations in the US over $550 Billion each year

Much of this loss is due to organizations allowing leaderless leaders to steal the innovative energy of people. Leaderless Leaders fail to create an environment for people to deliver value for customers.

Generative leaders give birth to organizations and human beings to demonstrate the ability to achieve amazing outcomes.

Imagine what generative leadership could do to help enable happy contributing people to reduce the $550B loss. Let’s share our experiences and stories about generative and leaderless leaders.

Coaching Agile Teams Deep Dive:

So What Did You Actually DO?

When done well, Agile Coaching, or any 21st century leadership role, is impossible to see from a distance and can even be invisible to those who you work with up close. How do you react when you hear this at performance management time: “Yes, I know the team is doing well, better than we could have imagined, and that’s great. But, what did you do? What was your specific contribution to their success?” If you’re like many Scrum Masters and Agile Coaches, you are hard-pressed to answer this challenge.

In this session, we will take a deep dive into the Coaching Agile Teams book to uncover the practices that help you become specific and solid in recognizing your contribution. We will also work through the ways common measuring sticks need to change so that we can start valuing the value of 21st century leadership skills, such as coaching and team capacity building.

Dependencies Do Not Exist, Collaboration Always Wins

Dependencies plague most software and IT groups, but they are simply situations in which the needs of the work don't match your team structure (silos). How can you recognize when your teams have become silos, when your work is planned at the expense of others, and when "protecting the team" guarantees poor execution.

Jim will talk about how he works with teams to quickly show these bottlenecks and dependencies for what they are: a simple failure to collaborate as the work requires. Then he will discuss how teams have truly self-organized to avoid dependencies and eliminate bottlenecks altogether.

He will do this in his usual insightful, yet funny, way. Hopefully.

Addressing Polarity in Your Team, Organization, and Life

Our world has become increasingly polarized, damaging our relationships and our ability to collaboratively solve hard problems.

In this session, I'll share a broad overview of how four different value sets have evolved over millennia as life conditions have evolved on the planet.

Each value set has its own patterns for how power is distributed, what structures and processes we use, and what incentives and disincentives are emphasized. We are currently at a tipping point, where each of the value sets are battling it out in increasingly toxic ways.

I'll then share an evolving fifth value set, one which amplifies the benefits of each of the first four and dampens their costs.

If you're frustrated with how polarized things have become, this session will give you insight and understanding to help move things in a positive direction for you, your team, and your organization.

Sound familiar? :)

Surviving Backdraft

Each year, highly trained firefighters die due to backdraft.

When a fire burns out all the oxygen in a sealed room, the situation becomes a ticking time bomb.

When the door to one of these smoldering rooms is opened, air suddenly floods in, giving the remaining fuel the oxygen it needs to violently explode.

As agilists, we aim to help our teams and organizations uncover dysfunction. We help breathe new life into areas that have been neglected or ignored for years. But, just as adding oxygen to a smoldering room can be a life-threatening experience, shedding light on dysfunction within a team or organization can lead to reactions ranging from discomfort to violent opposition.

In this session you'll learn mindfulness techniques you can use immediately to help deal with  uncomfortable feelings that can arise from helping take care of your team and organization (a.ka. "internal backdraft"), and  negative reactions by the organization or individuals that can crush an agile initiative (external backdraft).

We'll leverage the work of Dr. Kristin Neff (one of the world’s leading experts on self-compassion) and clinical psychologist Dr. Chris Germer to help us deal with the discomfort that can arise due to backdraft, along with Adam's own techniques for helping surface and highlight organizational dysfunction.

This session has been newly updated for 2022 to include even more tools you can use to help build resilience within yourself during these trying times.

How Daring to Dialogue Creates a Culture of Agility

The single greatest predictor of success is the way we are having or not having conversations.

If we can learn to be more intentional in how we invite, cultivate, participate, and facilitate conversations there will not be any challenge that an organization cannot skillfully navigate in order to produce effective outcomes.

But what if our conversations are stuck or ineffective? What if conversations break down instead of generating new collective thinking? We’ll look at conversations and how to use the structure of the conversations to harvest the intelligence that already exists, and the daring role leaders play in creating a space for dialogue in order to greatly change the nature of the discourse.

Key takeaways include:

⭐️ Four actions that everyone can take to foster better conversations
⭐️ Understand the impact of monologue vs dialogue on culture
⭐️ Three ways for leaders to engage in better dialogue starting today

How Agile Disrupts Bias & Anti-Bias Practical Tools

Did you know perfectionism is part of white supremacy?

Thankfully, agile’s use of product increments makes sure you’re not falling into those patterns of perfectionism.

Most people don’t want to be racist, sexist, or prejudiced in general. Yet simply living in the world exposes everyone to negative stereotypes about various groups of people, which can lead anyone to internalize harmful “unconscious bias” and accidentally discriminate against people they consciously respect.

In this session:

⭐️ We’ll review how to recognize unconscious bias
⭐️ Give you tips to reduce bias in your daily life
⭐️ Talk about how to reduce bias in the workplace

This is the aim of coaching and, in a working environment that requires excellence and continued growth, the ability for us to coach others and be coached ourselves is imperative.

Agile leadership coach Geoff Watts will share his top tips for how to get the best out of coaching others and being coached yourself so that you and your colleagues can pursue your own paths to mastery.

Risk, uncertainty, assumptions, oh my! Or "you can't see the forest through the trees."

As Product Owners or Product Managers, we are often so focused on the customers, users, value delivery, and product details that we sometimes "can't see the forest from the trees."

You may have heard this expression before. Urban Dictionary defines the expression as "if you look at things one at a time, you might not realize that a branch of separate "trees" goes together to make a forest."

The expression can be used in many ways. As Product Owners, we may miss the opportunities to identify and mitigate risk or validate assumptions if we are not "seeing the forest from the trees."

In this session, we will investigate a few ways to help us to identify and mitigate risk or validate assumptions in our Product Backlogs and Product Visions.

Essential Motivators: Individuals vs Teams

In knowledge work, people discover value. For this to happen, environments must be proactively focused on building responsibility through learning and motivation.

Join Diana Larsen and Tricia Broderick as they openly discuss essential motivators for individuals and teams.

Expect an examination of the similarities and differences for individuals versus teams. For example, they will explore if the motivation of increasing individual mastery reinforces the single expert silo within a team? If yes, what essential motivator would be better for a team to move from cooperation to collaboration?

And who knows what will happen in this unscripted discussion... what Diana, Tricia, and you will discover along the way.

Ronica Roth

Thursday May 5th, 2022 @ 9:30AM - 10:30AM PT (12:30PM - 1:30PM ET)

Modeling change through everyday practice

Leaders accelerate change when they consciously model lean-agile culture through their words, stance and actions every day. By practicing facilitative leadership skills, leaders at all levels tap the brilliance of the people around them and help everyone collaborate better. The facilitative leader looks around and thinks, “How might I help these amazing humans work together most effectively, and enable us to be wildly successful?” Facilitative leaders practice skills like active listening, using empowering language, using the power of silence, asking powerful questions, and welcoming elephants. They make it safe for others to also practice, fail, and learn, accelerating learning throughout the organization.

In this talk, Ronica shares what facilitative leadership looks like in action, and the impact it can have on others. She’ll invite leaders at all levels to examine how they are showing up, and to make a conscious decision to adopt an identity: “I am the kind of leader who _______.” We’ll then explore how you can use the power of intention, daily practice and habit formation--building on very small wins--to make that identity a reality. Attendees will commit to very specific small steps to begin to show up differently. “Be the change you want to see in the organization.”

Agilist Org Design for Skills to Grow Your Career

If you want to know what skills and/or org design you need to grow your career in Agile, come learn about John Deere’s Journey to Agile Expertise.

At John Deere we have around 75 Agile Coaches and 325 Scrum Masters around the globe. We began staffing these roles in 2019 and realized that we were lacking clarity of what success looks like. We also realized the transformation office needed to provide more support to help these individuals grow.

To solve this problem, we identified 8 key skill areas that apply to both the Agile Coach and the ScrumMaster. To aid in individual development we mapped the skills to a series of experiences and behaviors across 5 levels of mastery. What came next? We built a library of training, mentoring, or shadowing opportunities to achieve these skills.

In this talk we will discuss John Deere’s Agile Operating Model, ScrumMaster and Agile Coach roles and career path. For each of these roles we will detail the 8 key skill areas and share recommended actions to close the gap.

Come Collaborate With Other Agilists

While the first 4 days of the Agile Virtual Summit have tons of fantastic content from great speakers, this optional 5th day is your chance to work directly with your agile peers.

During this Open Space event, you'll join the Agile Mastery Inner Circle to discuss topics you're passionate about, and get help from others.

If you've never attended an Open Space event before, you're in for a treat. No previous experience required.

Note: While the 4-day Agile Virtual Summit is free for everyone, this 5th day requires an inexpensive paid ticket* (unless you're part of the Agile Mastery Inner Circle). Why? Because unlike the summit (that regularly gets 6,000 to 14,500 registrants), we need to keep this event small.

To get a ticket, sign up for the free event. Once you have, we'll send out information about how to purchase a ticket, or to apply for a scholarship ticket if you can't afford one.

*If the paid ticket is a financial hardship to you, please email us to inquire about one of the limited number of scholarship tickets we reserve.

You might know me from such hit YouTube videos as "Sh!t Bad Scrum Masters Say", my training materials like Build Your Own Scrum, or Recess (my retrospective-in-a-box).

If there's one thing I know, it's how to make learning about your team, your product, and yourself fun...

(and as you may have noticed, we could all use some fun right now)

Which is why I've assembled this fantastic group of agilists for Agile Virtual Summit 2022.

Like you, I’m spread thin these days… but I’m setting aside 5 days for some valuable agile goodness on May 2nd-6th.

Join us at the summit and have some fun.

Stay agile. Never change.
