Measuring What Matters - The Art of Measuring Business Agility

As we may know, Business Agility is a dynamic quality that organizations can cultivate through intentional and disciplined effort, much like athletic performance. But how can we measure it? While many organizations focus on measuring results and metrics like time-to-market and revenue growth, these indicators only tell part of the story.

In this talk, we will explore other fields that use agility and get inspired by how they measure it. We will then discuss why measuring capabilities is even more critical than measuring results when it comes to understanding an organization's agility.

Karim Harbott

Monday June 5th, 2023 @ 10:45AM - 11:45AM PT (1:45PM - 2:45PM ET)

Product Strategy, The Land That Scrum Forgot?

The terms product and business strategy are used a lot, often in ways that are distinctly unstrategic. A set of objectives, initiatives, or OKRs while potentially useful, do not form a coherent strategy.

As Product Owners, it is your job to ensure not just that the right product is being built and for whom, but also that there is a viable business model around it, and that there is sufficient uniqueness to allow it to succeed against its competitors. In this talk, we will cover the integrated set of strategic choices Product Owners must make so outthink, and out-deliver, the competition.

This talk is for Product Owners, product leaders, and product-focused coaches who enjoy delighting customers with amazing products.

Coaching Agile Teams Deep Dive – So What Did You Actually DO?

Learn ways to detect your value so that you can believe it, convey it to others, and help improve the measuring sticks for us all. When done well, Agile Coaching, or any 21st century leadership role, is impossible to see from a distance and can even be invisible to those who you work with up close.

How do you react when you hear this at performance management time: “Yes, I know the team is doing well, better than we could have imagined, and that’s great. But, what did you do? What was your specific contribution to their success?” If you’re like many Scrum Masters and Agile Coaches, you are hard pressed to answer this challenge.

In this session, which is a rebroadcast from AVS 2021, we will take a deep dive into the Coaching Agile Teams book to uncover the practices that help you become specific and solid in recognizing your contribution. We will also work through the ways common measuring sticks need to change so that we can start valuing the value of 21st century leadership skills, such as coaching and team capacity building.

Build a Better Team: Create Psychological Safety

Most of you have heard something about psychological safety but you may be thinking:

• What does it really mean for and my teams?
• Why do I need it?
• How do I make that happen?

Creating psychological safety is critical for you to foster innovation at the individual, team and organizational levels.

For servant leaders at all levels, recognize there is an urgency to create psychological safety in your teams and organizations and there are significant impacts when you don’t. First, we will explore what psychological safety really is and assess your current safety levels. I’ll also explain how our intersectionality directly impacts psychological safety on our teams and our organizations. Then I will share a few techniques for cultivating psychological safety that you can use with any team or group.

Cooking with the Wrong Ingredients: Why your educational design choices matter

In this session, you will learn about the different choices instructors, coaches, and facilitators make when building learning experiences, and the impacts of those choices on their attendees and the event overall.

By understanding the relationship between the knowledge to share, the instructional method used to convey the knowledge, and the assessment technique, participants in this session will gain practical knowledge about how to approach the design of their next learning experience to maximize student/attendee experience and retention.

If you're an Agile Coach, Scrum Master, Leader, or Team Member responsible for teaching others what you know, this session is for you.

How to Read the Room and Change the Outcome

The single greatest catalyst for change is the way we hold conversations with one another. But conversations can be tricky because they consist of both visible and invisible dynamics. Invisible group dynamics undermine relationships and performance. Being able to see and name the dynamics empowers teams to change the outcome.

In this session you will learn a language for how to ‘read the room’ and describe the structure of what’s happening in conversations, so that you can name the what’s happening in conversations and make the invisible more visible.

Agile: Nothing But the Truth

This talk introduces the agile mindset and essential principles for people and organizations to master to thrive in the world of digital disruption. It also addresses the critical considerations for transforming cultures and designing new eco-systems to rapidly adapt to constant change, which may be the single greatest competitive advantage in the 21st century.

To thrive in a world of digital disruption and continuous change, we must become Agile.

The Inestimable Disaster of Estimation

If there's one thing Agilists seem to have STRONG opinions about, it's estimation.

If you've experienced these strong opinions first hand, you know it can feel like a holy war... both sides "knowing" their side is the "right" side.

But what if this well-meaning attachment to specific estimation approaches is doing more harm than good for us all?

In this session, you'll discover:

  • Reasons to estimate work (and when to skip estimation entirely)
  • The #1 reason your team fears estimation, and what it's costing your organization
  • What professional horse handicappers can tell you about your estimates
  • Who should estimate work
  • The SINGLE thing that should guide which estimation method you use
  • Exactly how a specific (and very common) agile "metric" hurts everyone it touches, and what to do instead

Join Adam for this session and discover values and principles you can use to help your team and organization deliver value together, instead of hyper focusing on "doing estimation right".

Linda Rising

Tuesday June 6th, 2023 @ 2:00PM - 3:00PM PT (5:00PM - 6:00PM ET)

It's a noisy world out there!

Most of us know how cognitive biases affect our decision making, thanks to the work of Daniel Kahneman and his important book Thinking Fast and Slow.  Fewer of us know how noise affects our thinking.

Noise here means the variability in inputs and cognitive processing we contend with when making individual and collective judgments. Noise comes from a variety of sources. We are affected by the time of day, the weather, if our favorite sports team just won or lost. Everyone is now focused on reducing bias, but in many cases, noise is a greater source of error than bias.

Linda will introduce you to some surprising research about noise and decision making and offer suggestions for reducing noise. Note: if you reduce noise, you will also reduce bias. As Kahneman has said, "Wherever there is judgment, there is noise and more of it than you think."

DAY 3 - June 7th, 2023

Opening W/ Adam Weisbart

Wednesday June 7th, 2023 @ 9:30AM - 10:30AM PT (12:30PM - 1:30PM ET)

Agile Product Roadmaps

Product roadmaps are an important product management tool. But traditional feature-based roadmaps are difficult to apply in an agile context where change and uncertainty are present. Does this mean that we should stop using product roadmaps?

My talk discusses how you can successfully use agile product roadmaps to describe the value the product should create, align the stakeholders, and unburden the product backlog while avoiding premature commitments and preserving the ability to inspect and adapt.

Sohrab Salimi

Wednesday June 7th, 2023 @ 10:45AM - 11:45AM PT (1:45PM - 2:45PM ET)

Enablement first, empowerment second

Ever heard and agile coach say the following about the role of managers in an organization: "Managers should just empower the teams and get out of the way."

This sounds a lot like: "We do not need these managers at all as they do not deliver any value."

That might be true if we look at how bad managers do their job. But it is certainly not true if we look at some of the best managers.

Being a medical doctor in my first career, I saw first-hand what incredible value attending physicians brought to young doctors like me, to the patients, and to the hospital.

I learned that, great leaders do not get out of the way... they pave the way for you, they set the boundaries within which you can take decisions, and they support you when your stuck in analysis paralysis.

Why retrospectives work, and sometimes don't work

Retrospectives is a crucial part of working in an agile way. The inspection and adaption needs sharing, appreciation and understanding to work. However, retrospectives are not easy to facilitate well. A number of things can make the retrospective less efficient, or even harmful. Join this session to get some inspiration to facilitate great retrospectives.

Three Collaborative Foes and How to Stop Them

Every collaboration requires coordination, which feels like extra work no matter how important the collaboration is. Political, psychological, and operational barriers we often see when trying to bring change or just work together.

Jim Benson, author of the Collaboration Equation, will describe these common enemies of collaboration and three quick fixes so everyone can get up and running. This is taken from a section that didn't make it into the final draft of the book, so if you already have read The Collaboration Equation, this will be an excellent extension.

Managing Equitably

Management practices play a huge role in employee success, advancement, and their willingness to stay in an organization. However, decades of research shows that, despite our best intentions, status-quo management practices continue to generate race/gender inequities in promotion rates, retention rates, performance ratings distributions, pay, and representation. The good news is it’s possible to shift these conditions.

Join us to learn about creating optimal workplace conditions where all can belong, meaningfully contribute, and thrive.

Key Takeaways from this session:

Addressing the shortcomings of traditional manager training: Understand why these trainings often fail to improve workplace conditions and promote equity.

Introducing Managing Equitably: Learn about this transformative approach that empowers managers to recognize and address inequities in workplace outcomes, leading to optimal workplace conditions for all.

Real-world results: Discover the benefits of Managing Equitably, including reductions in race/gender inequities, improved workplace conditions, and positive changes in manager beliefs and behaviors.

Implementation guidance: Receive practical advice on integrating Managing Equitably into your organization and what to expect during the process.

By the end of the session, you'll gain a deeper understanding of DEI's role in organizational success and actionable steps to begin implementing Managing Equitably.

Our team of experienced facilitators, designers, and program evaluation experts will be available to answer your questions. We can’t wait to connect!

Agile Mastery Open Space

Friday June 9th, 2023 @ 9:00AM - 2PM PT (12:00PM - 5:00PM ET)

Come Collaborate With Other Agilists

While the first 4 days of the Agile Virtual Summit have tons of fantastic content from great speakers, this optional 5th day is your chance to work directly with your agile peers.

During this Open Space event, you'll join the Agile Mastery Inner Circle to discuss topics you're passionate about, and get help from others.

If you've never attended an Open Space event before, you're in for a treat. No previous experience required.

Note: While the 4-day Agile Virtual Summit is free for everyone, this 5th day requires an inexpensive paid ticket* (unless you're part of the Agile Mastery Inner Circle). Why? Because unlike the summit (that regularly gets 6,000 to 14,500 registrants), we need to keep this event small.

To get a ticket, sign up for the free event. Once you have, we'll send out information about how to purchase a ticket, or to apply for a scholarship ticket if you can't afford one.

*If the paid ticket is a financial hardship to you, please email us to inquire about one of the limited number of scholarship tickets we reserve.
